San Francisco, CA Initiative to Establish SF Sheriff’s Department Oversight Moves on to the Board of Supervisors

SF Examiner A ballot initiative to establish an Inspector General and a Sheriff’s Department Oversight Panel to oversee the SF Sheriff’s Department passed the SF Board of Supervisors Rules Committee and will move forward to a full Board vote. Barbara Attard supported establishing an independent office to investigate alleged deputy misconduct. Other speakers, including District Attorney Chesa Boudin and Public Defender Manohar Raju discussed increased transparency.  The article provides background on recent incidents, “In 2015, a group of sheriff’s deputies were accused of staging “gladiator-style” fights between inmates at County Jail. More recently, The City settled two lawsuits over alleged beatings in the jails totaling $180,000, the San Francisco Examiner previously reported.” If passed, the initiative would result in a  City Charter change.
